Set in a dystopian future, Earth’s utopian golden age has come and gone in the proverbial flash. Now… decades later, in the aftermath of the loss of our greatest heroes and villains, who briefly united to face-off against the would be Devourer of Worlds, Galactus, a new yet ancient evil has arisen to take advantage of the Earth in their absence.
Darkseid and his minions fell upon the world with an unholy vengeance and savaged it with the rapacious hunger of the wolf, falling upon a flock of sheep. Some nations did their best, or arguably their worst to fight back and broad swathes of the geography were turned into inhospitable wastelands overnight. Others simply fell to their knees and acknowledged their new masters, hoping for some shred of mercy in exchange for their dignity, while others simply fled in the face of certain destruction.
The resistance, such as it was, was tragically out-manned, outgunned and short-lived. In less than a fortnight Darkseid presided over the entirety of a grievously wounded and broken-spirited Earth. Years later, after a failed assault by the united forces of the Lantern Corps, his reign would become uncontested with the added power of a corrupted Phoenix at his side.
From the ashes of mankind’s defeat, like sun-hungry weeds sprung sprawling megaplex city-states, filled with the refuse of humanity, and millions of sycophantic devotees, willing to do anything for the smallest kernel of his approval. From their number rose the dreaded Apokolites and the virtual omnipresent forces of S.H.I.E.L.D. and S.H.A.D.E.. A sense of cloying, perpetual desperation taints the air, alongside a bigotry and animosity that rage across the world like the tempestuous wind and waves of a typhoon, with only the tyranny of the strong over the weak as a daily constant. Mutates, mutants, metahumans and the like are loathed and feared in the same breath if they serve Darkseid, and viewed as the swiftest route to fame and fortune if not.
Where will you leave your mark upon a world where trust and hope are the rarest and most priceless of commodities, and anonymity means the difference between life and death, or life as a slave or something less? Unlicensed and non-validated supers carry a hefty bounty, and a veritable army of ever watchful Sentinels, Brainiacs and Ultrons serve as the lapdogs of an uncaring and tyrannical overlord.
